The Embassy of the United States of America in Algiers, launches a research program entitled: “Norman E. Borlaug Fellowship Program” initiated by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), intended for Algeria for the year 2020.
The objective of this scholarship program is to promote agricultural productivity, food security and economic growth,) through collaborative research. It offers training in agricultural research, leadership, and agricultural policies for the benefit of university professors, researchers and Algerian government officials.
Selected candidates will work individually with an American mentor who will coordinate the training program. At the end of this training cycle (10 to 12 weeks), the American mentor will go to the scholarship holder’s home institution to continue the collaboration on the research project. The United States Department of Agriculture will select host institutions and mentors for each fellow.
This year, the program for Algeria focuses on three themes:
1. animal health focused on risk assessment and prevention of transboundary animal diseases,
2. biotechnology focused on new technologies, in particular CRISPR (Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats) technology to advance food security and improve business strategies,
3. plant health (integrated pest management strategies for the self-sustaining armyworm).
